SIA Vegas 09 - The Last one!

So I have been going to Las Vegas for the SIA trade show for the past 14 years. I think i only missed one year. Anyways this is the last year the show will be in Vegas :-( It is moving to Denver cause somebody got a sweet deal on a convention spot there. Many people are stoked, I on the other hand am pretty bummed. I like Vegas. A lot of people don't, but I think its a real fun time in the middle of the year that breaks up the winter. Kinda like spring break, but it's "winter break." Recently the Vegas Trade show has been has been a bit different for me now that I work for K2. I used to be able to sleep in until when ever, but now I have to wake at 8:00 in order to be at the show to help sell our awesome K2 boards. Its fun and I love it. I love seeing peoples reactions to the boards I worked so hard on all year. Its very rewarding. Anyways, Vegas will be missed by me. So here are my photos from the last vegas trade show ever. enjoy!

Street Chicken with the mobster

So after a long days work in the factory, it is sometimes fun to roll down the street into the little village a couple blocks away. The village is full of bikes, people, kids and a few animals and always has some good sights.

This is the bike I ride while in china. the Fortuna.

One of the things that is fun to do is to go to the street side chicken stands.

These are basically grills on the side of the road where ladies cook all types of veggies, soups,

and chicken that looks like it was just crucified called Jesus Chickens which are sliced open, jammed with tooth picks and rubbed with tasty spices.

So you sit at these really small tables with tiny stools with no backs and just chill drinking beers out of tiny little dixie cup size cups and enjoy your delicious street food.

Its usually pretty mellow but this night was different. Turns out the local Mob / Gang leader was sitting across from us and he decided that tonight he wanted to drink with the Foreigners. So he comes over and sits with us and orders a round of beers from the street food vendors.

Now since he is the leader of the little village basically, everyone drops what they are doing in order to make sure he is happy.

beers start flowing and the dixie cups start getting filled. He is already hammered, and really wants all of us to be hammered as well. WE know this because he makes sure all our beers are filled overflowing to the top and then "cheers" us to pound the whole drink.

WASTED! Right after this he, he got all pale in the face and took off running and puked before he could get to the side of the building out of the way. he puked around the corner a bit then rallied back for more beers!

He kept forcing me to drink beers, but since I wasnt really drinking he decided to buy me a Coke with a straw.

One of Our fellow workers that speaks chinese is translating all his words to us. At one point he calls his wife to bring their child down to meet us cause she is learning english, but the wife hangs up on him and then appears 15 minutes later to drag him home. But before he left for the night, he made a couple other calls and had one of his goons pick us up some traditional desserts called Moon cakes.

Now it is an annual holiday here in china and part of the tradition is to eat these things called moon cakes. I guess they taste terrible but its a tradition. So were sitting there and this dude on a motocycle comes rollin up and drops a bag of cakes off to us. We don't want to offend the leader of this village, so we accept his gift an make like we are gonna eat them. So the wife appears and takes him away, He pays for all our food and beers and we figure it is our out to head home.

Anyways it was totally random and pretty crazy night, but was rad to meet the leader of a Mob for a village in a comunist country. Sketchy.

I Woke up this Am and went into the office and was greeted by what I thought was some delicious Dunkin Donuts. Upon further investigations i found that it was the china version called Angers/Beskan Donuts.

So day 1 was full of hellos and getting situated at my new office for the next 2 weeks. I did a lot of work and played the role of problem solver all while still running on about 4hrs of sleep since I left Seattle. once day 1 at the factory was done, we went out to eat at this Thai Restaurant in downtown Guangzhou called the Banana leaf.

the restaurant had these crazy VERY flamboyant dancing team that would walk from table to table and sing to the guest, similar to how a mariachi band would at a Mexican restaurant except they were singing Mama Mia the musical show tunes. Super creepy and hilarious.

So we were the table of Americans hoping to avoid the singing mess, while all the other tables were full of businessmen from many different countries who were all about it. They would get up and dance and sing with the crazy dancers. The table next to use was full of guys from India that went crazy when they came over. It was nuts. Andy (below in the blue hat) and matt (sitting next to him) wanted nothing to do with it and avoided eye contact at all cost. Since we were sitting in the front, one of the male dancers started flirting with andy asking where he was from and what he did. Andy was so nervous and scared he actually told him the truth. The dancer kept winking at him and asked him if he wanted to dance. So funny! (The Guy behind Matt actually slapped the same guy dancer on the ass)

The dancer behind me is the dancer who liked Andy.

This is me on 4 hrs sleep after 2 days.

The food actually turned out to be really good.

The ride home was full of Neon fun.

Once back to the dorms I finally got some sleep.

Arrival in Hong Kong and off to China

So after being awake for 28 hrs, I finally got some sleep in Hong Kong. Not alot, only 4 hrs, but it made a difference. my hotel was kinda crazy in that I had a 1 person hot tub on my patio.

on my way to the train i picked up some breakfast in Hong Kong, US style. McDonalds and Starbucks

The train ride took about 2 hours and was full of sites as usual.

So I made it to the factory. check back for more updates soon.

Dinner at Tokyo airport

Stop one is Tokyo. I always love to eat at the same sushi joint. It's
real good. I guess I could call it a midnight snack since it's 1:00
am. Well another 2 hrs of layover then the 5 hrs to hong kong.

So I am off to china to the factory. Here is my first breakfast from
the seattle airport. Next Is the 10hr flight to Tokyo then a 4 hr
layover, another 5 hr flight to hong kong, 20 min train ride to the
city and finally a 15 min walk to the hotel. At this point it will be
noon tomorrow Seattle time. Long trip. So keep checking back here for
updates along my way. I will try to update a couple times a day with
sweet china crazyness. Ok laters!

Sigur Ros and YouTube make a little bit of history this Friday (Mar 7) with the band taking over the entire front page of the site around the world for a whole day, becoming the first group to ever have a feature-length music DVD streamed on the channel, with their acclaimed 'Heima' documentary shown in its complete 97-minute glory.

All 12 available slots on YouTube's home page will be devoted to the Icelandic quartet for a full 24-hours, putting them before a global audience of hundreds of millions. The link-up follows the success of 'Minn Heima', a competition hosted by YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/group/MinnHeima) for fans of the band to create their own little version of 'Heima', using audio and video clips posted online. The 10 best entries, as judged by the band, will be featured on the home page, alongside the film itself, as well as a special message from the band, taking time off from recording their new album in Reykjavik.
